What dental consultation involves
The consultation begins with a medical history: the dentist asks about your symptoms, past treatment, general health conditions and any medications you take. They then examine your teeth, fillings, gums and bite.
If needed, the dentist orders an X-ray or takes a 3D intraoral scan. For cosmetic treatment, a Digital Smile Design project can be prepared – a digital simulation of the planned changes.
Dental consultation at LumiDent: step by step
- Medical history and examinationA conversation about your symptoms and expectations, and an examination of your teeth, gums and bite.
- Additional diagnosticsIf needed, an X-ray, 3D scan or intraoral photos.
- Treatment planThe dentist discusses possible solutions, the order of procedures and the approximate cost.
- Follow-up visitsYou can book your first procedure straight away at reception.
We plan treatment for the whole mouth, not just a single tooth. Our dentists agree the treatment plan and the order of procedures together – from fillings and root canal treatment to prosthetics, implants and orthodontics. You receive the plan together with a cost estimate.
Dental consultation
Usually considered when:
- you haven't been to the dentist for more than a year
- you want to plan more extensive treatment, e.g. implants or prosthetics
- you need a second opinion before treatment
- you are changing dentists and want to know the condition of your teeth
May not be suitable when:
- you have severe, acute pain – in that case it is better to book an emergency (pain relief) visit
- you only need a professional cleaning – you can book it directly

Questions about dental consultation
How long does a dental consultation take?
A dental consultation usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. The time depends on how many issues there are to discuss and whether additional tests, such as a 3D scan or an X-ray, are needed. When planning extensive treatment, the dentist may suggest a separate visit to go over the plan.
Will I get a written treatment plan during a dental consultation?
Yes, after a dental consultation you can receive a treatment plan with the order of procedures and an approximate cost estimate. Preparing a detailed plan is a separate item in the price list. In simpler cases, the dentist discusses the recommendations verbally during the visit.
How does a dental check-up differ from a dentist consultation?
A dental check-up with a discussion of your oral health is an assessment of all your teeth and gums – the dentist tells you what needs treatment and what only needs monitoring. A dentist consultation is a visit focused on a specific problem or planned treatment, such as implants, prosthetics or orthodontics. If you are not sure where to start, choose the check-up.
