Gum recession – when is monitoring enough and when is a procedure needed?

Not every recession needs surgery. A procedure is considered when the tooth neck is sensitive, the recession is getting bigger, it bothers you cosmetically or the gum is very thin. First the dentist looks for the cause – for example brushing too hard or inflammation – because without addressing it the problem may come back. Teeth cleaning at LumiDent

What to expect

How gum surgery works at LumiDent

From consultation to check-up – with the price given before the procedure.

  1. Consultation

Examining the gums, measuring the recession or pockets, and an X-ray if needed. The dentist suggests a method and tells you the cost.

  2. Preparation

Professional cleaning and treating inflammation – the procedure is done on healthy, clean gums.

  3. Procedure

Under local anaesthesia. For a graft, tissue is usually taken from the palate, or a collagen material is used.

  4. Healing

Written instructions: diet, hygiene, medication. Stitches are usually removed after 10–14 days.

  5. Check-up

Assessing healing and advice on caring for your gums so that the recession does not come back.

When

When gum surgery is worth considering

A procedure is usually considered when:

  • tooth necks are exposed, sensitive or the recession is getting bigger
  • the gum is very thin – before braces or around an implant
  • a tooth is too short for a crown or veneer
  • deep pockets remain after non-surgical treatment
  • there is inflammation or tissue loss around an implant

The procedure may be postponed when:

  • there is active gum inflammation – professional cleaning and non-surgical treatment are needed first
  • you smoke a lot – smoking clearly slows healing, and the dentist discusses this before the procedure
  • you have uncontrolled diabetes or take certain medications – then a consultation with your doctor is needed

Questions

Frequently asked questions about gum surgery at LumiDent

How much does gum recession coverage cost?

At LumiDent the price applies to a section of up to 2 teeth: coronally advanced flap 2 600 PLN, with Emdogain 3 400 PLN, tunnel technique 2 800 PLN (with a graft from the palate) or 3 100 PLN (with Mucograft), Zucchelli technique 3 200 PLN. The dentist chooses the method at the consultation (250 PLN).

Who performs the procedures?

Periodontal surgery is performed by Orest Shtuka – a dentist in practice since 2000 who works in oral surgery, implantology and periodontal surgery. He speaks with patients in Polish, Ukrainian and Russian.

Does the procedure hurt?

The procedure is done under local anaesthesia. Afterwards there may be swelling and tenderness for a few days, especially where the graft was taken from the palate – the dentist recommends painkillers and may use a splint with a palatal cover.

Will gum recession go back on its own?

No – gum that has receded does not grow back by itself. Removing the cause (e.g. changing your brushing technique) can stop the recession, but an exposed root can only be covered with a procedure.

How long does healing take?

Stitches are usually removed after 10–14 days. For the first weeks you need to be gentle with the treated area when eating and brushing. Full tissue maturation takes several months.

What is clinical crown lengthening?

The dentist reshapes the gum, and the bone edge if needed, to expose more of the tooth. It is done before a crown or veneer when the tooth is too short or the cavity reaches below the gum. Price per 1 tooth: 400 PLN, or 700 PLN with bone reshaping.

What is peri-implantitis?

It is inflammation of the tissue around an implant, which can lead to bone loss. Surgical treatment involves cleaning the implant surface and, if needed, regenerating the bone: 1 500 PLN or 2 600 PLN per 1 implant.

Can I be treated under the NFZ (Polish public health insurance)?

LumiDent is a private clinic; procedures are paid according to the price list. You learn the cost before the procedure. If you have private insurance that covers dental treatment, on request we will issue a document confirming the procedures and payment so you can claim a refund from your insurer.
