What paediatric dentistry involves
An introductory visit lets the child get to know the surgery, the chair and the dentist without any treatment. At later visits the dentist checks the teeth and teaches both child and parent how to brush properly.
Fissure sealants protect the grooves of the molars from decay, and fluoride treatment strengthens the enamel. Baby teeth are treated because losing them too early can affect the position of the permanent teeth.
Paediatric dentistry at LumiDent: step by step
- Introductory visitGetting to know the surgery and the dentist, plus a short check-up.
- Check-up and preventionAssessment of the teeth, brushing instruction, fluoride treatment or fissure sealing.
- TreatmentIf needed, fillings, root canal treatment or extraction of a baby tooth.
- Check-upsUsually every 3–6 months.
Children are seen by Dr Julia Kartynnik, who works in paediatric dentistry. During check-ups she also keeps an eye on how your child's bite is developing – if anything raises questions, your child can see Dr Mariya Shylovich, who works in orthodontics for children and adults. This way we plan dental treatment and any orthodontic treatment together.
Paediatric dentistry
Usually considered when:
- it is the first visit – usually once the first teeth have come through
- your child complains of pain or there are dark spots on the teeth
- the first permanent molars are coming through (fissure sealing)
May not be suitable when:
- for very extensive treatment in a young child, or when the child does not cooperate with the dentist, the dentist may refer you to a centre that provides treatment under sedation or general anaesthesia

Questions about paediatric dentistry
When should the first paediatric dentistry visit be?
The first visit to a paediatric dentist is usually recommended once the first teeth appear, and no later than around the first birthday. An early visit makes it possible to assess tooth development, discuss hygiene and eating habits, and help the child get used to the surgery before any treatment is needed.
Are baby teeth treated in paediatric dentistry?
Yes, in paediatric dentistry baby teeth are treated. They hold space for the permanent teeth and are needed for chewing and speech. Untreated decay can cause pain and inflammation and affect the developing permanent teeth. The dentist adapts treatment to the child's age and cooperation.
What is fissure sealing in paediatric dentistry?
Fissure sealing in paediatric dentistry means filling the grooves on the chewing surface of the molars with a flowable material that makes it harder for bacteria to build up. The procedure is usually painless and requires no drilling. It is usually done soon after a permanent tooth comes through.
